Watergate Pun Run Its Course

The first time that somebody appended the suffix "gate" to the end of a scandal, it was probably funny. Oh yes, just like Watergate. How very droll.

However, now that we are twelvety zintrillion scandals on from that, the appeal of the joke is right down there with nada. The big bagel. Zilch.

Stop doing it! Now!

I will not have a bad word said about puns, when they are responsible for so much good in the world. For example, many a time we have seen the happiness of a few poofters thwarted by their caring relatives on American daytime television by screaming "Adam and Eve!, not Adam and STEVE!" (for lezzies substitute "Madam" for "Adam).
I can't wait for the day Bill Gates does something controversial enough for the press to invent "Gatesgate", or perhaps Cher posing for a photo with her likeness at a wax museum drawing the headline "Cher and Cher alike", and fuck knows why Whittler's good freind Schapelle didn't just "blame it on the boogie". The jury would have laughed so hard they would have forgiven the lying mole for everything.

Ah yes, but do you really enjoy the same pun repeated over and over and over again? Puns are great - when they are fresh. Gatesgate would be acceptable, as it adds a new twist to the pun. Also acceptable would be Goldengate (a scandel involving a golden retriever or Goldie Hawn).
